Center for Metabolomic Studies
Our Focus
The focus of the Center is the underlying science that utilizes metabolomics and development of faculty who will drive this field going forward at both the basic science and clinical-translational levels. The CMS is led by Dr. Fornace as the Executive Director and Dr. Cheema as the Associate Director.
About the Center
The mission of the Center is to support and expand Georgetown’s capability in the fast-moving field of metabolomics and facilitate scholarly studies at both the basic and clinical-translational levels.
Our Research
The research component of the center is central to our mission. It encompasses three main thrusts to drive its success: Basic Science, Translational/Clinical efforts, and Technology Development.
Support the Center
Dr. Fornace, the Executive Director of the Center, is the first holder of the Molecular Cancer Research Chair, and this initiative blends with well with Center activities and strengthens the capacities for activities in the Center.
About Metabolomics
Metabolomics is the study of metabolites, the chemical products of metabolic pathways, which are deposited in the body’s biofluids and tissues. The composition and concentration of these metabolites vary in the body in response to injury, stress, and environmental stimuli. In our laboratories, we employ state of the art mass spectrometry to detect even the slightest changes in the concentration of metabolites in biological samples. The sensitivity and accuracy of modern mass spectrometers combined with our powerful and interactive statistical software have provided us with a unique ability to perform high-throughput, yet detailed, analysis of the metabolome.
